Juneteenth, official name: “Juneteenth National Independence Day”, became a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth which commemorates the end of slavery in the US, is observed annually on June 19. Historically, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas, and it became a state holiday in 1980. Soon after, other states followed suit.
Celebrations have continued and only have grown across the United States, including in the Pacific NW and into the 21st century, and typically include prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing.
